Hello new and returning Sailfish,

It has been a long winter and now it is time to finally start thinking about summer and swimming!  The Colby Sailfish Swim Team is holding their registration on May 4, 2011.  We have attached the registration form if you would like to fill it out ahead of time to bring in with you that night.  Also attached is the winter training affidavit, required by Swim Nova Scotia, verifying that your child has not trained more than 2 hours per week over the winter (excluding swim classes).  This needs to be signed by the swimmer.  We will have these forms available if you wish to fill them out that night, and in that case please remember to bring your child’s health card as well.  This year’s summer season is 8 weeks long and runs from June 27 - August 19, with Provincials being held the weekend of August 19-21.

This year the registration cost will be $275 per swimmer for the first two swimmers in a family.  The third family member will be $125; a fourth family member is free.  The cost for winter swimmers who may want to train with us over the summer is $275.  This fee will also include a silicone swim cap with name, and a team photo.  You have the option to pay in full at the time of registration or you can pay in two installments - $150 per child on registration day, plus a post dated cheque for the remaining $125 on July 15, 2011.  The registration fee also includes the $25 fee to register each swimmer with Swim Nova Scotia for the summer season.  You can make your cheque out to Colby Sailfish Parents Association to bring with you on registration night.  In addition to the registration fee, we will be requiring a $60 post-dated cheque per family (not per swimmer) to help with fundraising.

As you are aware, the Sailfish is a non-profit organization and therefore has to rely on additional fundraising to meet the increasing costs and overhead associated with running the team. While we strive to keep the registration fees as low as possible, there have been increases in a number of expenses this year.

As with any volunteer organization, parents play an important role. Help is required for such things as assisting with time trials, timing at time trials and meets, transportation of the team equipment to and from meets, and helping to organize and run our own meet, as well as the end of the year banquet.  Last year there were many, many emails sent out looking for volunteers for various things.  It would be helpful if we had a list of people who were already committed to helping out in various areas before the season starts.  We will have several lists posted on registration night for volunteering and we would greatly appreciate it if each family signed up for at least one area.  Here is what we will have posted, so please have a look and see where you can help out:
-          3 volunteers per swim meet, therefore, we need 24volunteers in total (1 with a van or truck to transport the tarps, and 2 other families to meet them there early to help set up the tarps).  We plan on having an orientation at the pool on how to set up the tarps so we are all familiar with this as it has been overwhelming to people in the past on how to do this
-          2 parents to arrange and coordinate the end of the year banquet
-          2 parents to arrange and coordinate the canteen at our own swim meet
-          4 parents to coordinate our annual Colby Swim Meet

Team clothing is optional to purchase., but we do strongly encourage everyone to have at the very least a Sailfish swim cap, so our swimmers are easily identified when they race.  These will be available for purchase throughout the season.  This year we will have an online clothing store attached to ourwebsite through which you can order clothing year-round (to be added).  Samples will be available on registration night for sizing and viewing.

The swim meet schedule is yet to be finalized, and we are told by Swim Nova Scotia that it will be available the second week of May.  This will be forwarded along to you as soon as it is made available.  Our team’s summer calendar of events will also be sent to you once that is finalized.

We look forward to seeing you on registration night.  If you are unable to attend the registration, please call one of our executive to assist you with an alternate time.    If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of us.

Regards,

Colby Sailfish Executive

There have been a few changes and additions made this year:

  1. Minimum requirement to join the team- Swim Kids 5 or equivalent and be able to swim 1 length of the pool unassisted.

  2. This is a competitive team and swimmers will be required to attend at least 2 swim meets this season (your choice of meets), excluding time trials.

  3. Team clothing is optional to purchase, but we do strongly encourage everyone to have at the very least a Sailfish swim cap, so our swimmers are easily identified when they race.  These will be available for purchase throughout the season.
